Chapter Fourteen

Vesperon

My feet move without me realizing, and before I know it, I’m at her house.

What I assume is her house, because there she is.

She turns down a small walkway and meets another woman standing on the porch. They share words I can’t hear from here, then hug and go inside.

I blink a few times and look around, realizing I am away from my zone. I don’t believe this area is overlooked by a Shadow, but I know it isn’t mine to watch over. Mine spreads across the park and the school, not among the homes. When creatures cross over, it is in through the darkness, not out in the open like this, as there isn’t enough space for them to squeeze through. We need ample space to move through realms.

I glance over my shoulder, toward the park. It’s quiet. Calm.

Being gone for a few more moments will be fine, I think.

I move through the lawns, sticking close to the houses and cars so I blend in if someone is looking outside. I move through bushes and fences as if they aren’t there, until I am at her house. Lexia’s house. I peek through the windows, seeing through the sheer curtains, and spot her mother and her sharing more words. They are blurry, but I’d know my Lexia anywhere. When my love moves down a hallway, I move with her, glancing into every window. The next two I pass have thick blinds and curtains. I cannot see through them, so I keep going. I move around the house, and find a room with the light on, the curtains parted just enough for me to see inside.

Mint-green walls, a bright-blue comforter on the bed, a small desk, and then . . .

The air leaves my lungs when I see her.

Lexia’s smooth, creamy skin on full display. What I would give to run my hands over her curves. Her hips are full, her legs thick. I want to touch them, feel their warmth and softness. I’d kiss every inch of her for hours, days, years, if she’d let me.

I watch, mouth agape, as she changes her clothing, the need to be with her almost too much to ignore. I cannot break into her house. I could, it would be so easy to walk in, but that could cause more problems than I need. It’s bad enough I am breaking all these rules for her now.

I shouldn’t be here.

She picks up a device from the desk, then sits in her bed. She opens it, and I recognize it as a laptop. I stand there and watch her for so long, each second harder than the next. All I want to do is be with her. It’s only when a car blasting music drives by that I’m pulled back and realize I need to get back to my zone before something happens.

“Soon, my love,” I whisper, stepping back. “Soon enough, we will be together.”
